Houthavens

The first outline of the plan for Houthavens, which is under construction now, was drawn in close collaboration with the people living in the neighbourhood south of the new development, the famous example of Amsterdam School architecture, Spaarndammerbuurt. Islands encircled by new canals were drawn on the former industrial estate, in order to restore contact of this neighbourhood with the estuary called IJ. The school for old and new inhabitants together would be north of a new bridge between Houthavens and Spaarndammerbuurt. The new supermarket for both would be south of this bridge. Car traffic will have a tunnel at the foot of the existing dike. Transformation in the Eastern Harbour area had shown the decisiveness of the width of the piers for the possibilities of a new use. In Houthavens all piers were given a different width and section in order to generate variation in typology of housing. Some islands have a street, some a quay, some have both. Start of the development was not hindered by the real estate crisis. Private initiatives were the first to recognise and use the possibilities of this urban plan which has been popular since it was conceived with the people neighbouring it.
